Project abstract:
The recently measured Higgs mass at around 125 GeV, together with the unprecedented lightness of neutrinos, suggests that the Standard Model of particle interactions is not an ultimate framework. While the former indicates an instability of the electroweak vacuum, the latter, in turn, suggests that lepton number is not an exact symmetry of Nature even at the perturbative level. Remarkably, both these concerns are connected to another issue of the modern cosmology, namely, the baryon to photon ratio underpinning nucleosynthesis in the early Universe which, in the Standard Model, falls some 9 orders of magnitude below the measurement.
Among the extensions of the Standard model that may provide solutions to these problems, models with extended gauge symmetries play a prominent role. The assumed new dynamics not only provides spectacular signals of fundamental baryon number nonconservation in the beyondStandardModel physics but it is also likely to have played a central role in the hot primordial plasma of the early Universe where the baryonic matter excess was supposedly created.
The project aims at forming and sustaining a strong theory group with expertise to exploit the possible signals of baryon number violation in BSM physics (proton decay, collider effects of leptoquarks, baryon asymmetry of the early Universe etc.)
